Separating waste. What works and what doesn't for you?

The municipalities of Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Molenlanden, and Vijfheerenlanden are collaborating with Waardlanden on the preparation of a new waste plan.

To achieve this, we want to better understand what helps residents in their daily practice: what goes well and what do residents find difficult when separating and disposing of waste?

Cigarette butt mess

  • Date: 04-07-2026
  • Time of: 11.30
  • Time until: 12.30
  • Intro text: With eye-catching giant cigarette butts, we draw attention to the problem of butts on the street. Our environmental coaches are happy to discuss this with residents and hand out free pocket ashtrays. Because a small butt causes a big problem.
  • Local authority: Milllands
  • City: Giessenburg
  • Location: around Albert Heijn (small square and street)

On Saturday, July 4, striking giant cigarette butts will appear at four locations in the region. With this, we are drawing attention to a small object with major consequences: the cigarette butt.

Cigarette butts still often end up on the street, in green areas, or in drains. They are bad for the environment and difficult to clean up. With the giant butts, we make visible just how big the problem of a small butt is.

Environmental coaches from Waardlanden engage in positive conversations with residents at these locations. They also hand out free pocket ashtrays to smokers. This allows smokers to extinguish their butts and take them with them if there is no waste bin nearby.

With this visible action, Waardlanden is participating in PeukMeuk for the third time. The action aligns with the Hey Viespeuk campaign, through which Waardlanden is working with the municipalities to reduce the number of cigarette butts on the streets. Because cigarette butts on the street are simply unacceptable.

You are cordially invited to attend.

And do you have questions about how to reduce waste at home, sort raw materials properly, or dispose of them separately? Feel free to ask our environmental coaches Nelleke and Sjors.
