ARN is the diaper waste processor. Therefore, used disposable diapers may only be disposed of in ARN's special (semi-)transparent diaper waste bags.
You can dispose of used baby diapers at home in special diaper disposal bags. These can be picked up at various locations in Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Molenlanden, and Vijfheerenlanden.

You can return full bags of baby diapers to our recycling centers free of charge using your environmental pass.
The only diaper recycling plant is ARN's in Nijmegen. There's limited space for diaper recycling there, so we can only offer this service to a limited extent. If a new recycling plant opens in the future, we'll reassess the costs and environmental benefits before deciding on more locations where you can drop off disposable diapers separately.
Only used disposable diapers may be placed in the baby diaper disposal bags. Do not include (latex) gloves, washcloths, underlays, ointment jars, tubes, or other items. These are very harmful to the recycling process.
In the Waardlanden municipalities, incontinence supplies are considered medical waste. People with a medical condition who cannot reduce their residual waste due to medical waste may be eligible for compensation. For more information, please contact your municipality.

Materials other than disposable diapers are very harmful to the recycling process.
The waste processor has a special machine for recycling baby diapers. This machine can convert baby diapers into new products, such as plastic and fertilizer. The recycling process separates materials like plastic, cellulose, and other components. These materials are used as raw materials for the production of new products. For example, the plastic can be recycled into other plastic products. This way, we can reduce waste even more and make the planet healthier.
Baby diapers disposed of with your residual waste end up in the incinerator. Baby diapers disposed of separately at the recycling center are partially processed into raw materials for making new products, such as plastic car parts. This processing method has a lower environmental impact than incineration in a waste-to-energy plant.

Approximately 530.000 babies and children in the Netherlands wear diapers annually. This results in 150 million kilos of diaper waste annually. That's about 300 kilos per child per year, or 25 kilos per month. A child wears an average of 5 diapers per day before they're potty trained. Washable diapers are better for the environment than disposable diapers because they create less waste and emit less CO2. The cost of baby diapers depends heavily on how you use them. The brand of disposable diaper you choose and the number of changes you make affect the cost, for example. So do the choices of used or new cloth diapers, and whether or not to dry them in a dryer. Cloth diapers are cheaper: with average use.
