Since January 1, 2024, the municipalities of Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam and Molenlanden rates for the collection and delivery service of bulky household waste The introduction of fees for the collection and delivery service for bulky household waste does not apply to residents of Vijfheerenlanden. This municipality will decide on the introduction of fees later.
A rate for bulky household waste appears to be a very good way of reducing the amount of bulky waste that has to be incinerated.
Bulky waste that residents have collected at home is residual waste and is incinerated. This is unfortunate, because bulky household waste contains many valuable materials that can be reused. By charging a fee for this bulky waste collection service, the municipalities encourage residents to sort their bulky household waste, disassemble it at home, and dispose of it separately at the recycling center. This reduces the amount of incineration required, and allows for more recycling. This way, we ensure more circular and sustainable waste management in the region.
The fees also result in less commercial waste at recycling centers. Because of the fees, the financial advantage for contractors and landscapers to dispose of their commercial waste for free disappears. Businesses must arrange and pay for the disposal of their own commercial waste. Residents were never meant to pay for the disposal of commercial waste.
Many residents hire a contractor to carry out their home renovations or garden refurbishments. The contractor then takes care of the waste disposal, and the client pays for this. If a resident carries out the work themselves and takes the waste to the recycling center, the costs are not borne by them, but by all residents. And that's unfair.
