Back to the overview

You're probably familiar with them: plastic foam scouring pads. They're found in almost every kitchen and are very handy. But did you know that these pads are bad for the environment? Fortunately, there are sustainable alternatives that work just as well and are better for the environment.

Plastic foam scouring pads are usually made of polyurethane. This material doesn't biodegrade. During cleaning, tiny bits of plastic are constantly worn off. These pieces, also called microplastics, are washed away with the water. They enter rivers, oceans, and ultimately the food chain via wastewater.
Sponges don't last long. They wear out quickly and require frequent replacement. This creates a lot of waste. So choose a sustainable alternative.

1. Luffa sponges

Use a loofah. This sponge is made from plant fibers. Luffahs are 100% natural and compostable. They contain no chemicals, are durable, and perfect for scrubbing away baked-on residue. They're also gentle enough for delicate surfaces like glass, pans, and tiles. And they last longer than plastic scouring pads. A perfect alternative to plastic foam scouring pads.

2. Coconut fiber sponges

Try a coconut fiber sponge, made from coconut fibers. They're biodegradable and very durable: ideal for heavily soiled surfaces, such as burnt-on pans.

3. Wooden dishwashing brushes

Choose a wooden dishwashing brush with natural bristles, free of microplastics. Super durable, because when the brush head wears out, you can replace it. The handle will last for years.

make the difference

By switching to a sustainable alternative to scouring pads, you'll help reduce the amount of microplastics in the environment. And you'll make cleaning a little greener. It's a small change in your daily habits, but one that makes a big difference for the planet. Together, we'll work towards a cleaner environment and a waste-free future.
