Back to the overview

A cat in the house almost certainly means a litter box. But did you know that your choice of cat litter has an impact on the environment? With over 3 million cats in the Netherlands and an average of 50-100 kg of litter used per year per cat, it's important to be aware of the environmental impact.

Tips for sustainable use of cat litter

  1. Regular cleaning: Regularly removing feces reduces the need to change litter frequently and reduces odor.

  2. Choose renewable resources: Use cat litter made from materials like wood chips, corn stalks, or wheat stalks. These are more sustainable than mineral litters.

  3. Proper disposal: Used cat litter belongs in residual waste, not in organic waste. This even applies to litter made from renewable resources due to its potential for harmful substances.

  4. Avoid composting: Cat litter may contain printing ink or harmful substances that are not suitable for composting. So don't throw it in the compost pile.

  5. Avoid flushing: Never flush cat litter down the toilet to prevent blockages.

  6. Use clumping cat litter: it makes cleaning easier. You can easily scoop out the dried feces. Once the non-clumping litter is saturated, the entire litter box should be cleaned.

Choose wisely and contribute to a greener world, even when you clean the litter box. For more tips, visit waardlanden.nl/tips
