Back to the overview

Today we celebrate World Mosquito Day. This isn't just any day; it's a reminder that mosquitoes can spread malaria. This disease is mainly found in Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. Fortunately, we don't have malaria here in the Netherlands. But mosquitoes can still be a nuisance, especially when you're outdoors or camping. Here are a few simple, waste-free tips to keep mosquitoes at bay.

1. No stagnant water

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. Check that you don't have any bowls, watering cans, or flowerpots filled with water around your house, tent, or caravan. Empty them to prevent mosquito breeding in your garden.

2. Eat garlic

Mosquitoes don't like the smell of garlic. Eating some garlic can help keep mosquitoes away. It's an easy and natural way to protect yourself.

3. Use natural deterrents

Instead of chemical sprays, you can use lemon eucalyptus oil. Mosquitoes don't like this scent, so it can help keep them away without having to use harmful substances on your skin.

4. Green mosquito repellents

There are also plants that repel mosquitoes, such as lemon balm, lemon geranium, and lemongrass. Plant these plants in your garden, on your balcony, near your tent, or caravan to naturally keep mosquitoes at bay.

5. Sleep under a mosquito net

A mosquito net keeps mosquitoes away while you sleep. Just make sure the net doesn't have holes, otherwise mosquitoes can still get in.

6. Wear long clothes

When outdoors, wear long sleeves and long pants, especially at dusk. This helps prevent mosquito bites. For extra protection, you can also wear socks.

7. Still got a mosquito bite?

If you've been stung, you can soothe the itching by applying a little lemon juice or vinegar to the bite. This will help reduce the irritation.

With these tips, you can enjoy your time outdoors without being bothered by too many mosquitoes. Have fun on World Mosquito Day and enjoy your mosquito-free time!
