For most residents in the municipalities of Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Molenlanden, and Vijfheerenlanden, separating waste is already commonplace. Waste disposal tax and rates

You pay waste disposal tax for the costs incurred by your municipality and Waardlanden to collect and process household waste and raw materials. The waste disposal tax is levied by your municipality.

How high is your waste disposal tax?

Your municipality sets the waste collection tax annually. This consists of a fixed rate and a variable rate, which we call the recycling rate. You can find the waste collection tax amount on your municipality's website. Click on the link for your municipality.

Want to see how often you have offered residual waste?

Every time you dispose of residual waste in the collection container, you use your environmental pass. We record how often you dispose of residual waste. If you live in a rural area and have a residual waste container at home, we scan the chip in your container when it's emptied. This way, we keep an accurate record of how often we've emptied your container.

On your 2026 tax assessment, you can see how often you disposed of residual waste during the 2025 period. If you believe the number is incorrect, you can file an objection with your municipality's tax authority:

Recycling rate for residual waste

Since January 1, 2024, the municipalities of Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, and Molenlanden have been calculating waste disposal charges using a new method. You can influence the amount of the waste disposal charge. Part of the charge is fixed, while the other part fluctuates. This variable portion is called the recycling rate. If you separate raw materials properly and have little residual waste, your costs will be lower than if you have a lot of residual waste. Your municipality takes into account people with a lot of medical waste, litter pickers, and people with insufficient income.
Residents of the municipality of Vijfheerenlanden have no influence on part of the waste collection tax. This municipality will not calculate the waste collection tax using a new method as of January 1, 2024, but will decide later on the implementation of the recycling rate.

Why did municipalities introduce the recycling rate?

Our residual waste still contains many valuable raw materials. Plastic, food scraps, textiles, cardboard, glass, paper, you name it. And that's a shame. Because we can make new products from these materials. This saves us raw materials and energy, which is better for the environment. It also reduces the amount of residual waste we have to incinerate. The recycling rate helps with that.

When does the recycling rate apply?

You pay the recycling fee each time you have your residual waste container emptied or throw residual waste in the collection container. You can dispose of a maximum 60-liter garbage bag each time. If you separate raw materials well and have little residual waste, your costs will be lower than if you have a lot of residual waste. How does the recycling rate work?

Every household pays waste collection tax. The municipalities of Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, and Molenlanden have divided the waste collection tax into a fixed portion and a variable portion. This variable portion is called the recycling rate. The amount varies per household.
The fixed portion is the same for everyone in your municipality. You pay this at the beginning of the year, along with your municipal taxes. At the end of the year, the municipality determines the amount you owe for the variable portion. You pay this variable portion afterwards. The amount depends on how often you have your residual waste container emptied or disposed of residual waste in the residual waste container. We read this number using a chip on your residual waste container or the number of times you opened the residual waste container with your environmental pass.
