Back to overview

Do you live outside the built-up area or on the outskirts of the municipality of Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Molenlanden or Vijfheerenlanden? Then you will have received a 240-litre container with chip for your residual waste in the last quarter of 2022.

Changes around waste in 2023-2024

The coming period will see changes around waste in the municipalities of Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Molenlanden and Vijfheerenlanden. For example, the municipalities want to encourage and help all residents to produce less waste and separate it (even) better. To this end, the municipalities drew up a new raw materials policy together with Waardlanden last year. This new plan sets out how we will reduce the amount of waste. We want to go from 232 kilograms in 2020 to 100 kilograms per person per year by 2025.

Why separate waste?

Some 70 per cent of our waste is raw material. Like plastic, paper, glass, garden waste and food scraps. If we separate this properly, we can reuse it. From VGF waste, for instance, we can make compost. From PMD we can make new packaging and products. And an old table gets a new life if we take it to a recycling centre. If we separate waste better and reuse more of it, we need to extract fewer new materials from the earth. And there will be less residual waste that we have to incinerate. Also, the national government's incineration tax makes burning residual waste increasingly expensive. So less waste is important for the environment and for your wallet.

Why a new residual waste container with a chip?

The new residual waste containers have a chip. This chip has a unique number linked to your address. It does not contain any other personal information. Special equipment in our trucks reads the chip every time a container is emptied. And thus registers how often a container is emptied. Without the chip, we can no longer empty your container. Old residual waste containers without a chip can no longer be emptied.

Recycling rate from 1 January 2024

By registering how often you have your residual waste container emptied, we can further improve our services and collection routes. In time, this registration is also necessary because municipalities Gorinchem, Hardinxveld-Giessendam and Molenlanden will start calculating the waste disposal charges in a new way from 1 January 2024. This new way will give you influence on the amount of part of the waste disposal charges. A part is fixed and a part is variable. This variable part is called the recycling rate. You will then pay the recycling rate each time you have your residual waste container emptied. Do you separate raw materials well and have little residual waste? Then the costs will be lower than if you have a lot of residual waste.
In doing so, your municipality takes into account people with a lot of medical waste, litter pickers and those with insufficient income.

Municipality of Vijfheerenlanden will decide on recycling tariff after an evaluation.
